COFFEE IN MALAYSIA
Despite being discovered by accident only about 500 years ago, coffee has grown to become the second most widely consumed beverage in the world, after water! Coffee is cultivated in about 70 countries in the world. The top three producers being Brazil, Vietnam, and Indonesia.
There are basically two type of coffee beans, Robusta and Arabica. Robusta beans are grown on lower foothills and produce strong and earthy coffee. Arabica beans are grown on a higher elevation and produce more aromatic and spicy coffee.
Coffee are normally distinguished by its aroma, its flavour, its body and its acidity – the combination of which determine the characteristic of a particular brew of coffee. The characteristic of a coffee is influenced by, amongst others, its varietal or species, where and how it was grown, how it was harvested and processed, and how it was being roasted and brewed. Because of the wide ranging possible combination of characteristics, coffee does taste very differently from one country to another.
The Malaysia Traditional Coffee, known locally as the Kopi-O, are Robusta beans roasted with margarine and caramelized sugar. The resulting coffee mixture typically contains about 40% coffee. Sugar was added to reduce cost and to produce a dark burnt taste revered by local coffee drinkers. The traditional coffee goes well with lots of sugar or condensed milk. The caramelization process does produce some tar in the coffee which is avoided by health conscious coffee drinkers.

In the 1980s, Malaysians saw the introduction of 3 in 1 coffee, which basically is a premixed powder containing instant coffee, creamer, and sugar. The 3 in 1 coffee market grew rapidly in Malaysia as it appeals to consumers seeking for an affordable and convenient coffee drinking experience. At a later stage, foaming creamer was added to the 3 in 1 coffee to produce what is now known as the Malaysian White Coffee. Due to the popularity of premixed coffee in Malaysia, many foreign visitors started to export Malaysian premixed coffee to their home countries and as a result, Malaysia is now the world’s largest exporter of such premixed coffee. The quality and prices of premixed coffee in Malaysia would vary substantially. Premixed coffee at the lower end of the price spectrum tend to contain a substantial amount of chemical flavouring agents. These flavouring agents are added to reduce the cost of production.
In the mid 1990s, Malaysians began to experience the introduction of high-end chain coffee stores such as Starbucks and The Coffee Bean And Tea Leaf. These stores typically offer refined coffee and coffee-based drinks made from pure coffee beans and frothed milk. These stores are always well-decorated and very popular with coffee drinkers seeking a comfortable environment to relax and to catch up with acquaintances. The drinks are expensive, typically about 5 to 10 times the prices of coffee at a local coffeeshop. The development of coffee culture in Malaysia is such that coffee are seldom brewed and served at home. Those longing to experience a good and unadulterated cup of coffee normally would have to frequent these high-end chain coffee stores.
